Reflexology

Reflexology (or zone therapy) is a technique that is intended to influence energetic aspects of the body which, in-turn, address physical issues. Energy ("life force," Qi, Chi, Prana…) is believed to be present and accessible at certain points along energetic flow lines (meridians). Through the methods of reflexology, energetic imbalances, stagnations, or restricted flow can be improved. The same fundamental principles that give credibility to acupuncture, acupressure, yoga, and other ancient techniques, form the basis for reflexology. The concepts of reflexology are mentioned as far back as 2330 B.C. by the Egyptian culture.

Whereas some systems of bodywork address energetic flow in numerous areas throughout the body; reflexology focuses primarily on the feet, hands, ears or nose. The most common type of reflexology in our Western culture predominantly involves foot work. There are many precise and well known areas, primarily located on the plantar (bottom) portion of the foot that are mapped to remote areas and organs of the body. Therefore, through working the feet, specific and general reactions can occur that enhance wellness.
Some well know benefits of reflexology include:

  · Stress reduction
  · Headache relief
  · Constipation Relief
  · Enhanced sleep
  · Increased energy
  · Cleansing the body of toxins and impurities

Your Session

A reflexology session typically takes 30 minutes. Prior to beginning the session, you will complete a general information intake form and consult with the reflexologist. During this consultation you will be able to ask any questions and identify the goals for your session. The session will be conducted in a private room and you will be in a comfortable, reclined position. The lower legs and feet need to be accessible but you do not need to get undressed for a reflexology session. Depending on the goals of the session and your unique needs, the session will consist of a variety of general foot work with specific attention to targeted areas.  In some cases, lotions, base oils, powders and/or essential oils may be used to enhance the therapeutic benefit of the session. Preparation for the session is simple; have clean feet and come ready to relax. There are very few contraindications for reflexology, but the presence of any type of contagious skin or foot issue would preclude being able to participate in a session.

Some people have a very gentle response to a reflexology session; it simply provides the benefit of enhanced relaxation. Others, who may have energetic imbalances or need for detoxification, may experience shifts in their current state of emotion or physical awareness. In rare instances, this may manifest as a brief period of general malaise or discomfort (a “healing crisis”) but it quickly resolves with an enhanced outcome. You can optimize the benefits of your session by trying to schedule minimal activities for a period of time post-session and by drinking adequate amounts of water.

Many people find that regularly scheduled sessions provide the most consistent and noticeable benefit.
