Achieving Balance Within
Jim has a broad range of education and experience in a variety of fields. Prior to entering into massage and bodywork, he was a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Certified Alcohol and Drug Dependency Counselor, and a Psychologist for the Illinois Department of Corrections. He also currently works at Northern Illinois University. Through his experiences working in the mental health field, he discovered that there are some fundamental interventions that can help a person improve their quality of life; such as reducing stress, enhancing emotional resilience, and balancing the effects of negative thoughts and energy. It is his opinion that the whole person needs to be taken into account when trying to improve wellness and health.
Jim believes that true wellness, healing, and health, comes from the body’s inherent ability to respond and adapt to stressors or “dis-ease” in order to maintain a sense of balance. This ability to adapt is fully dependant on the combination of emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical aspects of a person. Approaching wellness from this integrated perspective, Jim wanted to explore more direct methods, such as bodywork, to enhance the ability of the person-body to be in a balanced and stress reduced place. Therefore, he specializes in a wide variety of bodywork techniques and modalities that provide the opportunity for balance at a root level. In addition to providing bodywork and Reiki sessions, Jim also teaches clients self-care through meditation classes and Reiki attunements. His recent focus and educational efforts have been in pursuit of this philosophy.
Jim’s formal education consists of undergraduate work in business administration and social work; graduate level work in counseling psychology, doctoral level work in clinical psychology, and post doctoral certification in cognitive-behavioral psychology. He is currently completing a PhD in Natural Health; a certification program with the Institute of Integrative Aromatherapy; and coursework with The Ayurvedic Institute. Jim is a graduate, with distinction, from the COMTA approved Kishwaukee Therapeutic Massage Program. He is a professional member of: the International Association of Reiki Practitioners; the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists; Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals, American Massage Therapy Association and The American Botanical Council. He is also an associate member of the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International.
